This week's menu in Belval, 14 to 19 September: six days, and balanzoni

We closed for two days. A whole weekend, which does not happen that often in a caffè.

On Monday at 6:30 we open again. And this time we do not stop on Friday evening: the six dishes run through to Saturday.

A pasta named after a man who never stops talking

In Bologna there is a stage character called Dottor Balanzone. A doctor in a black gown who quotes Latin badly and talks, and talks, and nobody ever manages to cut him off. He is the city’s mask in the commedia dell’arte.

Balanzoni are his pasta. Green, from the spinach in the dough, filled and folded like fat tortelloni. In Bologna they are stuffed with mortadella and ricotta.

This week we fill them with monkfish and scampi, with a turmeric sauce. The doctor would not have approved. He would still have finished the plate.

The same woods

Blueberries and porcini grow in the same place, under the same trees, in the same weeks of September. Anyone who goes out for one tends to come back with the other.

This week’s risotto puts them on the same plate, which is really the most sensible thing to do with them. The sweetness of the berries, the depth of the mushrooms, and the rice taking in both.

Six days

Monday and Tuesday we close at 18:00. Wednesday to Friday we stay until 19:00.

On Saturday we are here from 9:00 to 14:00. A full counter, coffee, and the six dishes of the week until we close.

On the campus the corridors are filling up again. If you have just arrived in Belval, we open at 6:30 Monday to Friday. The first cappuccino is often the best one.
